Suggestions
for Learning to Listen to and Identify Music
If
you struggle with keeping time to the music or are simply new
to the concept of dancing and moving to music, try this to help
you get started.
Start listening to music in a different way. When you have your
radio or stereo on, listen only to the drums or bass guitar. Count
each time you hear that beat . Most music is written in 4/4 time
so you can count from 1 to 4 or even 1 to 8. That's all I want
you to do for several weeks. Just listen to the music and count.
Don't do anything more. Train yourself to hear music in a different
way before trying to dance to the song.
Trying to identify what dance to do to a song played by a DJ is
often a challenge all by itself for someone who is beginning to
learn to dance. This section is designed to help you meet that
challenge more easily.
After listening to these songs carefully and dancing to them,
you will begin to pick up on the style of music it is. It's a
pretty safe bet that other similar songs will work with the same
dance.
Here are some pop and standard songs
that are great for dancing. Listed also is the kind of dance that
best fits that particular song.
